Exploring the Heart of Bohemia

Our Prague adventure began in the Staré Město (Old Town), where we stayed in a cozy studio apartment right at the entrance to the Karlův most (Charles Bridge). From our windows we had incredible views of Kostel sv. Františka z Assisi (St. Francis Church) and the statue of Charles IV. It was the perfect base — central, charming, and close to everything.

Day 1: Castles, Cathedrals & Clockwork Wonders

We had pre-booked our tickets online for Pražský hrad (Prague Castle), which turned out to be a smart choice. Crossing the Karlův most was an experience in itself — pausing at each of its 30 baroque statues, every one telling a story of saints and history, while soaking in views of the Vltava and the red-roofed city with the castle towering above.

The cobblestone walk to the castle was lined with bustling shops selling bohémské sklo (Bohemian glass) and crystal, street musicians, and inviting cafés. Climbing the steps slowly, the city view on our left kept us motivated until we finally reached the gates.

Inside the castle complex, our guide highlighted four must-sees:

  • Katedrála sv. Víta (St. Vitus Cathedral) — stunning stained-glass windows that held us captive with their storytelling light.
  • Starý královský palác (Old Royal Palace) — steeped in centuries of history.
  • Bazilika sv. Jiří (St. George’s Basilica) — simple yet powerful in its Romanesque beauty.
  • Zlatá ulička (Golden Lane) — tiny, colorful houses that once belonged to castle workers, now filled with shops and exhibits.

On the way back, we stopped by mini-markets for groceries, skipped a tempting chimney cake at Trdelník TĚDLO Café, and saved our sweet cravings for later. Lunch was quirky — stop at Dosa Dim, an Indian crepe-style eatery tucked along our route.

After a rest, we bought the PID day pass and hopped on Prague’s iconic trams. Our evening was spent walking along Náplavka, the lively riverside lined with pubs built under the arches of the bridge, their glass-panel doors opening to music, seafood, and giant pitchers of local beer.

By sunset, we were at Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square) to see the legendary Orloj (Astronomical Clock). At 7:00 PM sharp, we joined the crowd to watch the 12 Apostles parade past the blue windows. While the astronomical dials of zodiac signs, moon, and sun were more complex than we could decipher, the charm of the square was undeniable. The gothic towers of Týnský chrám (Church of Our Lady before Týn) and the lively atmosphere made this moment unforgettable.

We finally indulged in Chimney Cake at Karlova 25, one of the fancier Old Czech shops. The evening wrapped up with the whimsical WOW Black Light Theatre — a mix of circus, illusion, and surreal creatures glowing in neon, floating balls soaring over the audience, and a performance full of color and imagination.

Walking back through Old Town and across the Charles Bridge lit up at night was pure magic. Back in our apartment, we ended the night with noodles, watching the city lights shimmer outside.

Day 2: Trams, Pilgrimage, and Farewell

We started slow after the full first day of hours of walking, enjoying a hearty breakfast before taking Tram #22, which winds past Prague Castle and local neighborhoods, all the way to Bílá Hora (White Mountain). There we visited the Kostel Panny Marie Vítězné (Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of Victories) — though closed on Mondays, the site still carried deep significance. Nearby, the battlefield memorial of Bílá Hora reminded us of the turning point that ended the Bohemian era in 1620.

Returning to Old Town, we strolled across Karlův most once again, this time lingering with street musicians, caricature artists, and jewelry vendors who give the bridge its constant lively rhythm.

Our final stop before departure was the Židovská čtvrť (Jewish Quarter), where history and resilience are etched into every synagogue and cemetery stone. It was a thoughtful, grounding way to close our Prague journey before catching the evening bus to Slovenia.

Closing Note

Prague gifted us two unforgettable days of history, beauty, and vibrant street life. From the stained-glass glow of St. Vitus, to the astronomical magic of Orloj, to riverside beer under glass-arched pubs at Náplavka — every corner felt alive with stories. It was a trip that blended wonder with reflection, laughter with discovery, and left us eager to return.
